The word Arcus originates from the Arcus Argentariorum (“Arch of the Bankers”), a stone monument built in 204 AD in ancient Rome. Erected by a guild of argentarii—bankers and moneylenders—the arch stood at one of the main entrances to the Forum Boarium, near the Velabrum, a bustling commercial district. It served as both a symbolic and literal gateway to Roman commerce, where financial transactions, contracts, and partnerships were forged under its shadow, and reflects the prominence of finance in Roman civic life.
